Metal vs. Plastic Washers – What’s the difference?

 Image

Craft eyes come in one of two varieties:  A screw-type stem with plastic washer or a smooth stem with a metal washer.  What’s the difference?  The craft eyes that come with plastic washers are made of softer plastic, and they are not quite as good quality as the others.  This isn’t noticeable with black craft eyes, but it is for hand-painted ones.

Craft eyes with a smooth stem that take a metal washer are of harder plastic and have fewer flaws in them.  They are less likely to have rough edges.  Why does this matter?  Well, you may have noticed that I have switched all hand-painted craft eyes to the smooth stem/metal washer eyes.  The reason is because of the higher quality and better appearance of these eyes.  All craft eyes except the 12mm, 15mm, and 18mm have been the metal-washer kind up until now, so it really only affects those three sizes.

Some of you may notice that the 12mm and 15mm eyes are a bit smaller than the metal washers that come with them.  If the washer shows through your work, you can add a bit of felt or other padding in between the washer and fabric, and that will take care of it.

I hope you all like these craft eyes as much as I do!
